The vascular triplex is a type of color ultrasound examination for the investigation of the blood vessels to check their morphology and the course of the blood inside them. Through this imaging examination, the course of the blood vessels and their size can be investigated, to check the existence of any clots, narrowing or blockage of their lumen, especially of the carotid arteries that lead to the brain. At the same time, it has the ability to study the changes in blood flow caused by the strictures, but also to prevent possible pathological conditions.

The vessels examined through the triplex are:

  • The peripheral vessels, such as the carotid and vertebral arteries, the temporal arteries, the arteries and veins of the upper and lower extremities.
  • The visceral vessels, such as the abdominal aorta, the renal arteries and the splenic axis.

Through the vascular triplex, the respective vessels are examined, in order to find any anatomical anomalies or organic dysfunctions. Especially in cases where a person has a predisposition to coronary heart disease or arterial hypertension, suffers from diabetes mellitus, has suffered an ischemic episode or an abdominal aortic aneurysm, then this specific imaging examination is deemed imperative to map the problematic pathology and avoid serious health situations. If there is also suspicion of varicose veins of the lower extremities or thrombosis, it is necessary to check the vessels and veins.

More specifically, vascular triplex is performed for the following situations:

  • Investigation of acute vascular thrombosis
  • Investigation of valve insufficiency
  • Search for varicose veins in the lower extremities
  • Diagnosis of pulmonary embolism
  • Investigation of venous thrombosis
  • Preventive examination during pregnancy or in case of taking contraceptives
  • Research for the pathological cause in the case of swelling and itching in the lower extremities. Symptoms such as cramps during the night, heartburn, sense of heaviness in the leg area and skin conditions such as ulcers are investigated.

The examination procedure is extremely simple and completely painless and does not require any special preparation on the part of the person undergoing it. It is important that it is carried out by a doctor specialized in carrying out this type of examination, in order to draw a valid conclusion. Our diagnostic center is consisted of highly qualified staff with long experience in the field. The duration of the procedure depends on the total number of vessels examined each time.
